The Groom’s Cake: Wacky, Wild & Witty

A few months ago, I thought about surprising Stephen with a groom’s cake at the wedding or rehearsal dinner. But, with our budget already increasing and our regular cake sure to leave everyone beyond stuffed, I decided this was one thing we should probably skip.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped me from imagining what design I would choose if we were having a cake like this. After all, a girl can dream, right? And maybe it can be blamed on a little too much pre-wedding excitement, but I’m now thinking of throwing this into the mix as a last-minute splurge.

Since Stephen is an aerospace engineer and a huge fan of all things science-fiction, I’ve quickly discovered that the sky is indeed the limit, with tons of options for cakes featuring rockets, planes, Star Wars characters, and plenty of other fun motifs.

Here, a few wacky cakes that would surely make my future husband smile and laugh!

Are you doing a groom’s cake? If so, what theme are you planning to go with? Do you think I should order one ASAP, or just let it slide?

  1. My mom brought up the groom's cake. She wants it to be at the Welcome Party we are doing. And she wants to make it! We are thinking fish. There is a little story behind it, but typed out it's really long, so I will spare you! haha

  2. I've seen some awesome ones (although my favorite will always be that darn armadillo) but since Pete doesn't like cake its an easy way to save few hundred!

  3. I think we'll skip the groom's cake, but if we were going to do one, it would either be a guitar or the Guinness one above! It's a cute idea, for sure, but not really a tradition that I think my fiance is familiar with. Plus, neither of us are huge fans of cake!

  4. We're not doing a groom's cake since we are haing a 2 tier cake for cutting and a dessert buffet with lots of little cake, cup cakes and tarts and such. I think everyone will be all caked out.

  5. I love groom's cakes. Sadly we didn't have enough money in our budget to have one.

  6. As with everyone else, it seems, I would love to do a groom's cake (my fiance loooooves cake) but it's just not in the budget. If we did do one, though, I'm guessing it would have to be something related to the Red Sox. ;)

  8. Those are such cute groom's cakes! I wish we were having one, they're so much fun, but it's just not something that is done around here! Plus, we've already ordered about 3x as many cupcakes as we really need, so I'm sure our guests will get their fill of cake.

  9. Those look great! So fun! No groom's cake for us. Maybe you can get it for him for a birthday or other special occasion if its not in the wedding budget.

  10. I second Chocolate Lover's suggestion! We're planning on having a cake buffet and my fiance has requested that one of the cakes be chocolate with his family's crest on top. I'm hoping that will be doable with minimal extra expense.

  11. No groom's cake on our wedding day. Perhaps on our rehearsal dinner...
