Is Your Husband Your Best Friend?

I’ll always remember the way, back in high school, one of my favorite teachers used to speak about his wife, or rather, “his best friend,” as he always referred to her. Being 16 at the time, I thought how wonderful it must be to marry someone and share each day of your life with a best friend who understood you and loved you in a way no one else could. Looking ahead, I dreamed of the day when I, too, might have that experience for myself.

Today, more than 10 years later, I have the amazing priviledge of saying that I do. My husband is without a doubt my closest and dearest friend, and I treasure the way we are partners in all of life’s adventures and challenges. Abigail Adams, one of my heroines, also fondly referred to her husband as her “dearest friend,” which makes me feel as though I have at least something in common with this truly remarkable woman whose brilliance was far ahead of her time.

What do you think? Is your fiancé or husband your best friend? Is it possible to be married to someone who is not your dearest friend?

  3. Hmmm . . . I may be the odd woman out here, because I don't necessarily think of my husband as my best friend. Of course, he is a very dear friend, but there are just some things my girlfriends understand more than he does. Each of us had other best friends before we met, and we still have each of those people in our lives. Maybe as life goes on, our friends will move on, move away, and we'll grow apart, at which point my husband and I will default as to each others' best friend. Sounds a little harsh, but it works for us :)

  5. He is one of my best friends. I make it a point to make sure he doesn't become my ONLY best friend :)

  7. i read this article not too long ago that said that the reason so many marriages fail is that we expect too much of our spouse. It said that we cant expect them to be both our best friend and our spouse.

I completely disagree. My husband and I tell each other all the time that we are so lucky to have married our best friend. it feels amazing to be with someone we are so close to!

  8. def. best friends! I tell him everything and he's the one I want to spend the most time with. Good point by Laura above though...I try very hard to make sure I have other best friends on the side too so I don't lose site of my friends. It would be so easy to only hang out with my fiance all the time and not make time for our other friends, but that would be a shame.

  9. We are most definitely best friends! We tell each other everything and spend most of our time together. And of course we balance it out by spending time separately with our other best friends.

  10. Yes, my husband is definitely my best friend. Of course I have close girl friends but my husband knows me the most and I can literally talk to him about anything. We were friends before we started dating and have gone through a lot together. There's nobody who knows me as well as him!

  11. Absolutely!

We started off as friends and he was definitely was and still is my best male friend.

We met originally at school as we were in the same class from when we were 5! We didnt get together until I was 21 so we had plenty time to get to know one another before!

We love doing the same things and have the same wishes & dreams for the future which is important for a marriage.
